Aave Founder Warns Ethereum Proposal Could Drive Institutional Capital Off-Chain

Intelligence Brief

Aave founder Stani Kulechov has publicly opposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-8361, arguing that its current design could severely disrupt ETH-backed borrowing and reduce Ethereum’s appeal for institutional capital.

According to Kulechov, the proposal risks undermining one of Ethereum’s largest use cases by making ETH collateral less attractive within lending markets. He warned that if adopted without significant changes, institutions could shift borrowing activity toward competing blockchain ecosystems offering more predictable capital efficiency.

The criticism adds another high-profile voice to Ethereum’s ongoing governance debate as developers evaluate protocol changes ahead of future network upgrades.

Strategic Assessment

The discussion extends well beyond technical implementation.

Ethereum’s lending markets anchor billions of dollars in decentralized finance. ETH serves as collateral across protocols including Aave, Maker, Morpho and Spark, making borrowing efficiency a core component of Ethereum’s capital markets.

If a protocol upgrade reduces the attractiveness of holding or borrowing against ETH, the impact could extend beyond DeFi users. Institutions increasingly evaluating on-chain lending may choose alternative networks where collateral rules remain more favourable.

For competing Layer 1 ecosystems, any migration of institutional borrowing activity represents an opportunity to capture liquidity that has traditionally remained on Ethereum.

Market Context

Ethereum continues to dominate decentralized finance by total value locked, but competition has intensified.

Networks including Solana, BNB Chain and emerging institutional-focused ecosystems have steadily expanded their financial infrastructure while reducing transaction costs and improving execution speeds.

Governance proposals that materially affect capital efficiency are therefore receiving greater scrutiny, particularly as institutional participation becomes a larger share of on-chain activity.

The debate surrounding EIP-8361 reflects a broader challenge facing Ethereum: balancing long-term protocol improvements without weakening the economic incentives that support its lending ecosystem.

Threat Assessment

The proposal has not been finalised, and community discussion remains active.

If developers revise the proposal to address concerns raised by lending protocols, the market impact could be limited. However, adopting changes that reduce borrowing efficiency without broad industry support risks encouraging capital migration toward competing chains.

Markets should also distinguish between governance debate and implementation. Ethereum improvement proposals frequently undergo revisions before activation, and opposition from major ecosystem participants often influences the final specification.

Bottom Line

Stani Kulechov’s criticism places Ethereum’s lending economy at the centre of the EIP-8361 debate.

The issue is larger than a single protocol upgrade. It is a question of whether Ethereum can continue serving as the primary destination for institutional on-chain finance while preserving the capital efficiency that made its DeFi ecosystem the industry’s benchmark.
