Ethereum Sets 2029 Target for Quantum-Resistant Base Layer

Ethereum’s protocol teams are targeting December 2029 for quantum resistance across the network’s execution, consensus and data systems.

The date is deliberately early. No existing quantum computer can currently break Ethereum’s production cryptography, and estimates for a cryptographically relevant machine remain highly uncertain.

The risk concerns the signature systems used to authorize transactions and secure validators. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could theoretically derive private keys from exposed public keys.

Ethereum’s roadmap includes post-quantum signature systems, account changes, a public-key registry and contingency mechanisms intended to preserve network operations if the threat develops faster than expected.

Weekly post-quantum interoperability development networks are already running. Native account abstraction is also being considered because it could allow accounts to adopt alternative signature schemes more easily.

The Hegotá upgrade planned for 2027 will not itself make Ethereum quantum-resistant. Its importance is that it may establish technical foundations and preserve the schedule for later upgrades.
