French Banking Giant Moves Closer to Crypto With Reported Meria Acquisition

Intelligence Brief

Traditional banks continue expanding into digital assets.

According to BlockStories, CACEIS, the asset servicing arm of Crédit Agricole, is in exclusive talks to acquire French crypto investment platform Meria, a licensed provider with more than 150,000 users and approximately €350 million in assets under management.

If completed, the deal would deepen one of Europe’s largest banking groups’ presence in regulated crypto services.

Why It Matters

Meria operates under Europe’s MiCA framework and offers crypto brokerage and staking products to both retail and institutional clients.

Rather than building a crypto platform from scratch, CACEIS appears to be pursuing an established business with regulatory approval, an existing customer base, and operational infrastructure already in place.

The approach reflects a broader trend across Europe, where financial institutions are entering the digital asset market through acquisitions instead of developing new platforms internally.

Bigger Picture

The discussions come as MiCA provides a clearer regulatory framework for crypto businesses across the European Union.

For traditional banks, acquiring licensed firms offers a faster path into digital assets while reducing regulatory uncertainty and shortening time to market.

Intelligence Assessment

The reported acquisition is another sign that crypto is becoming part of mainstream financial services in Europe.

As regulation becomes more defined, established banks are increasingly treating licensed crypto firms as strategic infrastructure rather than speculative investments.
