Kraken has launched commission free trading for more than 7,000 US listed stocks and exchange traded funds for eligible customers across Europe, putting traditional securities and tokenized xStocks inside the same regulated account.
The expansion gives European users access to conventional US shares while retaining Kraken’s existing crypto and tokenized asset products. According to the announcement, Kraken is the only crypto focused platform currently offering both traditional shares and tokenized xStocks through one regulated account.
The distinction matters. Kraken is not replacing conventional equities with blockchain representations. It is offering both formats and allowing customers to choose how they want exposure.
That puts the exchange closer to a multi asset brokerage than a crypto only trading venue.
Strategic Assessment
Kraken is competing for capital that would normally leave crypto platforms when users want equity exposure.
A customer holding cash or digital assets on Kraken can now move into US stocks without opening a separate brokerage account. The commercial advantage is retention. More assets can remain inside Kraken’s financial infrastructure rather than moving between crypto exchanges and traditional brokers.
xStocks add another layer. Tokenized equities can support blockchain settlement and wider integration with crypto markets, while conventional shares give users direct access to the established securities system.
Kraken benefits whichever route gains traction.
The strategy also creates a direct test of demand. If customers consistently favour traditional shares, tokenized equities may remain a secondary product. If xStocks capture a growing share of activity, Kraken will have evidence that blockchain based equity access can compete with conventional brokerage rails.
