Ether waiting to leave Ethereum staking increased more than fivefold in three days after MetaMask began removing validators as a precaution following an infrastructure security incident.
The exit queue rose from approximately 166,000 ETH on September 29 to roughly 851,000 ETH on October 2. About 786,000 ETH remained queued early Monday, creating an estimated wait near 14 days.
MetaMask said in its September 30 user update that the incident affected part of its infrastructure and that it was exiting affected validators to protect delegated stake. The company said it found no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds were affected and does not control the withdrawal keys for the validators.
Ethereum limits how quickly validators can enter or leave so that a single operator cannot abruptly alter the network’s security set. A large precautionary exit therefore creates a backlog even when the underlying stake is expected to return.
The entry side remains larger. Approximately 1.5 million ETH was waiting to begin staking early Monday, with an estimated delay near 25 days.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
The queue spike is an operational consequence of the MetaMask incident, not evidence of a generalized flight from Ethereum staking. The unresolved security issue is the initial access path and whether any validator infrastructure beyond the identified deployment was exposed.
