MoneyGram Launches Stablecoin-Backed Visa Card in Colombia

MoneyGram has launched its first stablecoin-backed Visa card, beginning in Colombia and providing eligible customers with a direct route from stable-dollar balances to everyday merchant spending.

The product supports USDC at launch and extends MoneyGram’s stablecoin strategy beyond transfers and cash conversion.

Customers can manage the card through MoneyGram’s application and use the balance for merchant payments through Visa’s network.

The strategic significance is MoneyGram’s existing distribution infrastructure. Rather than building a crypto-only payment network from scratch, stablecoin capabilities can be layered onto an established global remittance system.

Colombia provides an important testing ground because Latin America remains one of the strongest regions for practical stablecoin adoption, particularly where consumers use digital dollars for remittances, savings and payments.

The next question is whether the product generates recurring transaction activity rather than simply registrations following launch.

This is stablecoin adoption at the consumer edge: digital-dollar storage, card spending and existing remittance infrastructure converging inside one product.

Watch active cards, transaction volume, repeat usage, fees and expansion into additional markets.

The real intelligence will come from usage, not issuance.
