Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust Contributions Outpace Early Redemptions

Intelligence Brief

Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust received $371.1 million in gross share contributions during its first 85 operating days, while distributions connected to redemptions totalled $5.26 million.

The trust reported a $66.86 million decrease in net assets from operations during the period ended 30 June. Almost all of that decline came from unrealised Bitcoin depreciation rather than investor withdrawals.

At quarter-end, the trust held 5,059.3077 BTC. Those holdings had a cost basis of approximately $365.18 million and a fair value near $299 million, using a reported Bitcoin price of $59,101.49.

Net asset value per share fell from $19.70 to $16.94 during the reporting period. The trust’s disclosed benchmark declined by a comparable amount.

The filing reports fund level share creation, redemption and valuation data. It does not identify the investors involved or establish whether secondary-market buyers maintained their positions after acquiring shares.

Strategic Assessment

The loss figure alone gives an incomplete account of the fund’s early performance.

Capital entered through share contributions even as Bitcoin’s price reduced the value of the trust’s holdings. Redemptions remained small relative to gross contributions during the reported period. That points to continued primary-market demand, not a mass exit.

Morgan Stanley benefits by extending Bitcoin access through a familiar regulated product. Investors gain exposure without managing wallets or private keys. They still absorb Bitcoin’s price risk and the structural costs attached to the trust.

The data should not be described as $371.1 million of permanent institutional conviction. Gross creations can later be sold in the secondary market, and the filing does not disclose beneficial owners.
