Polymarket Seeks U.S. Derivatives Licences to Expand Regulated Trading

Intelligence Brief

Polymarket is moving deeper into the U.S. regulatory system after an affiliated company filed for Futures Commission Merchant (FCM), National Futures Association (NFA) membership, and Swap Firm registrations.

If approved by the NFA and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the licences would allow the company to offer regulated margin trading on event contracts while operating under federal oversight.

The filings were submitted by PM Derivatives LLC through an affiliated entity, marking another step in Polymarket’s effort to establish a regulated presence in the U.S. derivatives market.

Intelligence Assessment

The filings are about more than adding leverage.

FCM registration would give Polymarket the regulatory foundation needed to compete directly with traditional derivatives platforms, positioning the company beyond its crypto-native roots. It also places Polymarket on a similar path to rival Kalshi, which has already secured comparable regulatory approvals.

Prediction markets continue to attract growing trading activity across politics, macroeconomics, sports, and digital assets. A regulated framework could make these products more accessible to institutional participants that require federally supervised trading venues.

Approval is not guaranteed. The CFTC must still determine whether Polymarket meets capital, compliance, customer protection, and risk management requirements before any leveraged products can launch.

For the prediction market sector, the race is shifting from user growth to regulatory positioning. Firms that secure federal approval are likely to hold an advantage as institutional participation expands.
