U.S. Court Orders $8.3M Crypto Forfeiture Tied to Alleged Ransomware Scheme

Intelligence Brief

A U.S. court has ordered the forfeiture of more than $8.3 million in cryptocurrency linked to cybersecurity negotiator Angelo Martino, who is accused of facilitating ransomware operations instead of protecting victims.

The seized assets include approximately 90 BTC, nearly 8,000 XMR, more than 56,000 XRP, over 39,000 XLM, and smaller SOL holdings. Authorities also ordered the forfeiture of luxury homes, vehicles, and boats allegedly connected to the operation.

According to court filings, prosecutors claim Martino helped negotiate ransom payments that ultimately benefited cybercriminals.

Strategic Assessment

The case reflects a broader shift in U.S. crypto enforcement.

Authorities are increasingly targeting intermediaries who allegedly enable illicit activity, rather than focusing solely on ransomware groups themselves. Asset forfeiture remains one of the government’s primary tools for disrupting financial networks tied to cybercrime.

For digital asset firms, the case reinforces growing scrutiny of businesses involved in crypto payments, negotiations, and compliance services. Companies operating in these sectors are likely to face higher expectations around due diligence, transaction monitoring, and anti-money laundering controls.
