Intelligence Brief
South Korea’s oldest cryptocurrency exchange, Korbit, has become part of the Mirae Asset Group after Mirae Asset Consulting acquired a 97.15% controlling stake in the platform.
The acquisition marks the first time an affiliate of a major South Korean financial group has taken control of a domestic crypto exchange. Korbit confirmed the ownership change will not affect customer accounts, with trading, deposits, withdrawals, and custody services continuing without interruption. User assets will remain segregated from company funds under South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act.
Mirae Asset also announced that Korbit will be rebranded as Digital X, positioning the exchange as the foundation of its broader “Mirae Asset 3.0” strategy. Rather than operating solely as a crypto trading platform, Digital X is expected to support real-world asset tokenization, security token offerings, stablecoins, and other digital investment products.
Intelligence Assessment
The acquisition is more than an exchange purchase.
Mirae Asset is using Korbit’s regulatory licence as the starting point for a wider digital asset platform that combines traditional finance with blockchain-based products. The rebranding to Digital X signals that the group’s long-term focus extends beyond spot crypto trading into tokenized financial markets.
Chairman Park Hyeon-joo also emphasized that compliance will remain central to the strategy, highlighting anti-money laundering controls, customer verification, information security, and fraud prevention as the platform expands.
The move reflects a broader trend across Asia, where established financial institutions are acquiring regulated crypto infrastructure instead of building it from scratch. As tokenization and stablecoins gain traction, licensed exchanges are becoming strategic assets for banks and asset managers seeking to expand into digital finance.
