Solana Supply Proposals Pair Higher Fee Burns With Faster Disinflation

Intelligence Brief

Two linked Solana governance proposals would reduce future SOL issuance while increasing the amount of transaction fees removed from circulation.

SIMD-0553 proposes resource-based transaction fees tied to the computing capacity consumed. Under current activity estimates, the change could raise daily burns from roughly 650 SOL to between 7,500 and 9,000 SOL.

SIMD-0550 would double the annual rate at which Solana’s inflation declines from 15% to 30%. The terminal inflation rate would remain 1.5%, but the network could reach it in 2029 rather than 2032. Estimates place the six-year reduction in emissions at approximately 18.9 million SOL.

Neither proposal has received final approval.

Initial signalling represented 24.94 million SOL, or about 5.8% of the reported 432.65 million SOL staked. Approximately 39.95 million additional SOL was required to reach the 15% threshold before signalling closes on 18 August.

Helius accounted for 16.03 million SOL of the initial support, close to two-thirds of the total.

Strategic Assessment

The package attacks dilution through two separate mechanisms: fewer new tokens and a larger usage-linked burn.

SOL holders benefit if lower net issuance reduces recurring supply. Validators and stakers carry the cost because rewards would decline faster. Resource-based fees could also change transaction costs for applications that consume more computing capacity.

The proposed burn does not automatically make SOL deflationary. Even the upper estimate of 9,000 SOL per day remains below reported daily issuance of roughly 60,000 SOL. Network activity would also determine how much is actually burned.

Governance concentration is the immediate concern. Helius provided most of the initial signalling support, while engineers associated with the company helped develop the proposals. That does not invalidate the package, but broader validator participation is needed before support can be described as distributed.
