Citi and DBS Move Dollars Across the Pacific on a Weekend Using Tokenized Deposits

Two of the world’s major banking institutions have demonstrated something conventional correspondent banking still struggles to provide: moving U.S. dollars internationally during the weekend in minutes.

DBS and Citi completed what they describe as the first weekend U.S. dollar payment between Singapore and the United States using tokenized commercial-bank deposits through Swift’s Digital Ledger. The transaction occurred September 5 between DBS and Citi’s New York office.

DBS says the payment took minutes. A comparable conventional cross-border transfer can take as long as two business days when weekends, cut-off times and time zones intervene.

That distinction is strategically important.

Stablecoins have gained traction partly because conventional bank money does not operate continuously. A company can conduct commerce at 2 a.m. Sunday, but the banking system underneath that commerce can still behave like it is Monday through Friday.

Tokenized deposits provide banks with another answer.

Instead of moving money outside the banking system through a stablecoin issuer, a bank can place its own deposit liabilities onto programmable infrastructure and make them transferable through digital settlement rails.

Citi previously joined a Swift pilot for 24/7 cross-border payments using tokenized deposits. DBS has also operated blockchain-based treasury infrastructure since 2024, including DBS Treasury Tokens. Citi is separately participating in work with major U.S. banks on a tokenized-deposit network targeted for the first half of 2027.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

Stablecoins are forcing banks to solve a problem they tolerated for decades: money that stops moving because the banking day ended.

This transaction is more important than another tokenization proof of concept because actual bank deposits crossed jurisdictions outside normal banking hours.

The strategic competition is becoming clearer: public stablecoins, bank-issued stablecoins, tokenized commercial deposits and potentially central-bank money will compete to become the settlement asset for an always-on financial system.

Watch whether Swift expands this capability to additional banks and currencies — and whether tokenized deposits begin settling securities and digital assets, not merely cross-border payments.
