India Completes First ₹5 Billion Tokenized Corporate-Bond Issuance

India’s state-owned REC raised ₹5 billion – approximately $57 million – through the country’s first tokenized corporate-bond issuance.

The securities carry a 7.30% coupon and mature in one year and nine months. The issuance began with a ₹1 billion base size and a ₹4 billion greenshoe option.

Investor bids reportedly reached ₹7.96 billion, indicating demand exceeded the amount issued. Participation was restricted to qualified institutions equipped with the required digital infrastructure.

The structure uses distributed-ledger technology to record the securities and wholesale central-bank digital currency for settlement. Investors need both a CBDC wallet and a compatible digital-securities account under India’s DEMAT 2.0 initiative.

This is not a permissionless DeFi bond. It is a regulated capital-market instrument using blockchain infrastructure while retaining established identity, custody and investor-protection controls.

A secondary market is expected to follow once compatible institutions and trading infrastructure are ready. That phase will be the real test of whether tokenization improves liquidity rather than merely changing the issuance process.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

India has moved tokenized bonds from planning into execution. The important signal is the coordination among the issuer, central bank, securities regulator and depositories.

Watch settlement performance, secondary-market activity, additional issuers and whether future offerings expand beyond a limited institutional pilot.
