AI agents are increasingly being designed to pay automatically for APIs, data and computing resources using stablecoins. Coinbase’s x402 protocol is one of the leading mechanisms for these machine-initiated payments.
The protocol uses the HTTP 402 payment status to let a service request payment before granting access to a resource. An agent can authorize a stablecoin transaction, settle the charge and continue its task without a human completing a checkout process.
However, new population-scale research warns that raw transaction counts may sharply overstate genuine commercial use. Researchers examined more than 136 million x402 settlements on Base representing approximately $44.1 million.
Their analysis classified 21.2% of the observed settlements as fictitious and 63.78% as internal activity within linked clusters. Concentration among payers, recipients and transaction values was extremely high.
The researchers estimated that independently verifiable payments to identifiable services represented only a small fraction of the reported activity. Their broader upper bound for value not provably manufactured was approximately $20.3 million.
The findings do not invalidate agent-native payments. They demonstrate that transaction count alone cannot establish independent customers, economic demand or commercial adoption.

Machine-to-machine payment infrastructure remains one of the strongest AI-crypto use cases, but the market needs better intelligence than headline settlement counts.
Watch unique independent payers, recurring merchant revenue, unsubsidized transaction costs, named commercial services and whether agents purchase resources that produce measurable economic output.
