U.S. Bank says it completed a live cross-border payment between its North American and European entities using USBDC, a proprietary dollar-backed stablecoin issued on Stellar.
The bank’s September 9 announcement says the transaction remained connected to its core finance, risk-management, compliance and operational systems.
The pilot tested more than payment execution. U.S. Bank evaluated minting, redemption, asset freezing and clawback functions—controls designed to give the issuer authority to stop or reverse activity under defined circumstances.
It also validated the bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform, which is intended to issue, manage and transfer tokenized assets while connecting blockchain networks with existing banking infrastructure.
Potential future uses include cross-border treasury operations, liquidity management and collateral mobility. U.S. Bank has not announced a public client launch or provided a deployment timetable.
The bank also did not disclose the transaction amount, reserve composition or precise legal claim represented by USBDC. Those omissions limit direct comparison with publicly circulating stablecoins.
The Defiant’s independent coverage notes that a bank-issued token on a public blockchain combines open-network settlement with controls expected in regulated financial infrastructure.

USBDC is currently a successful internal pilot—not a widely available stablecoin.
The significant development is that a major regulated bank integrated public-blockchain settlement with its existing compliance and financial-control systems.
Watch for client access, reserve disclosures, transaction volume, redemption terms and evidence that USBDC reduces time or cost compared with established bank-payment rails.
