Latin American telecommunications operator VIVA has begun using an Avalanche-based financial network called Iris for stablecoin settlement and eligible dollar-denominated operating reserves.
VIVA is the first telecommunications carrier operating on Iris, according to CoinDesk’s report.
The company has operated in Bolivia for more than 25 years and recently expanded into Mexico. The deployment uses USDi, a dollar-backed stablecoin issued through Agora’s stablecoin infrastructure.
Iris operates through a dedicated Avalanche Layer 1. That allows the system to configure its own settlement, compliance and operational policies while using Avalanche’s underlying technology.
The platform is designed to connect existing telecom identity, billing and retail-distribution systems with payments and other financial services. VIVA does not need to replace its current customer or network infrastructure.
Telecommunications companies can be significant financial-distribution channels in markets where traditional banking access is limited. Their customer identities, phone accounts and retail locations can support payments and savings products.
Public information does not yet establish how much of VIVA’s treasury is held through Iris, how much transaction volume has settled or which customers can access the new services.

The development is significant because it connects blockchain settlement with an operating telecommunications company rather than a stand-alone crypto application.
The confirmation metrics are actual stablecoin volume, reserve disclosures, customer adoption, redemption performance and regulatory treatment in Bolivia and Mexico.
