Coinbase users can now borrow USDC against Bitcoin with the interest rate and repayment date fixed when the loan is created.
The product uses Morpho Midnight, a noncustodial lending protocol deployed on Base. Coinbase controls the consumer interface while Morpho supplies the credit infrastructure and Base records settlement, according to Morpho’s launch announcement.
Coinbase already offers variable-rate borrowing through Morpho Blue. That business has more than $1.4 billion in active loans backed by approximately $3 billion in collateral.
Fixed pricing gives borrowers certainty over interest expense and maturity. It also creates liquidation risk if Bitcoin falls and the collateral no longer satisfies the loan’s required ratio.
The service lets holders obtain liquidity without selling Bitcoin, potentially deferring a taxable disposal in some jurisdictions. Tax treatment, interest deductibility and liquidation consequences still depend on the borrower’s location and circumstances.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
Fixed rates make onchain credit more comparable with conventional lending, where borrowers commonly know their payment schedule in advance.
The main risk has shifted from unpredictable interest rates to collateral volatility, protocol execution and liquidation mechanics. Borrowers need to understand how quickly positions can be closed during a Bitcoin drawdown.
Watch total fixed-rate originations, default and liquidation rates, available maturities, collateral requirements and whether Coinbase extends the structure to tokenized securities or other assets.
