Riot Repays $200 Million Coinbase Loan and Releases Bitcoin Collateral

Bitcoin miner Riot Platforms has repaid its Coinbase Credit facility in full, releasing Bitcoin, USDC and cash that had been pledged as collateral.

The company’s SEC filing says Riot completed the voluntary prepayment on September 21 and paid all outstanding principal and accrued interest. The facility provided up to $200 million in secured borrowing. sec.gov

Coinbase Custody Trust Company held the pledged assets. Termination of the agreement released Coinbase Credit’s security interests and ended its commitment to provide further loans.

Riot incurred no early termination fee or penalty. The filing does not specify how much of the facility was outstanding at repayment or identify the exact quantity of Bitcoin that had been pledged.

The move removes a secured creditor from Riot’s capital structure while the company expands beyond Bitcoin mining into data-center services. Its ability to repay without selling disclosed Bitcoin holdings would be relevant, but the filing does not identify the source of the repayment funds.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

Releasing pledged Bitcoin reduces liquidation and counterparty risk attached to Riot’s balance sheet. It also removes a source of flexible secured financing.

The missing detail is funding. Investors need Riot’s next financial disclosures to determine whether repayment came from operating cash, asset sales or another financing source. The collateral release is confirmed; its effect on net liquidity is not yet clear.
