Citi and Coinbase Connect Corporate Bank Accounts Directly to Stablecoin Payment Rails

Citi and Coinbase expanded their existing partnership Monday into something more operational than another institutional crypto pilot.

Coinbase selected Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet to power Coinbase Virtual Accounts, giving business customers fiat wallets capable of automatically converting incoming traditional currency into stablecoins. At the other end of the relationship, Citi’s institutional clients can now accept stablecoin payments through Spring by Citi using Coinbase’s payment infrastructure. Coinbase official announcement

The arrangement lets a merchant receive stablecoin payments without maintaining its own cryptocurrency infrastructure or holding the stablecoin after settlement. Coinbase handles the digital-asset payment path and conversion, while Citi provides the banking layer.

This expands a relationship the companies announced in October 2025. The earlier work focused on improving fiat-to-crypto infrastructure. Monday’s rollout gives businesses actual account and payment functionality connecting the two systems.

For Coinbase customers, incoming fiat can now enter a Citi-powered virtual account and be converted into stablecoins. For Citi customers, the path works in the opposite direction: a customer can pay in stablecoins while the merchant receives conventional fiat settlement.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

Stablecoin adoption is increasingly becoming invisible to the end merchant.

A company using Citi does not need to become a crypto company to accept a stablecoin payment. A company building through Coinbase does not need to construct its own banking stack to receive fiat.

That abstraction is likely more consequential for adoption than requiring businesses to custody tokens themselves. The useful metric from here is transaction volume. Infrastructure announcements become financially meaningful when corporate payment flows actually migrate onto the rails.
