Metaplanet disclosed an unusual Bitcoin treasury maneuver Monday: it sold 10,000 BTC during the third quarter and subsequently bought 11,000 BTC, ending the quarter with a net increase of 1,000 BTC and total holdings of 44,000 BTC. WizLabo Library
The company says the sale was designed to demonstrate that its Bitcoin holdings can be converted into cash when needed. The amount sold exceeded the aggregate outstanding principal of its bonds, borrowings and other interest-bearing liabilities. Those obligations were not repaid and remained outstanding.
Metaplanet tied the exercise to its effort to obtain a credit rating and broaden access to bonds and preferred-share financing. Its October 5 disclosure says credit assessors may distinguish between an asset that is liquid in theory and an issuer that has demonstrated willingness to monetize that asset to meet obligations. The transaction also created a capital loss for U.S. tax purposes. Metaplanet said any deferred tax asset associated with the loss remains subject to closing procedures and auditor review.
The company stressed that the sale and reacquisition did not represent a change in its long-term Bitcoin holding policy.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
This is a notable evolution in corporate Bitcoin treasury strategy. Metaplanet is treating Bitcoin not only as an accumulation asset but as collateral-like balance-sheet liquidity whose monetization can be demonstrated to credit markets.
The experiment will matter if it changes financing terms. A credit rating, cheaper debt or successful preferred issuance attributable to demonstrated Bitcoin liquidity would validate the strategy. Without that result, the round trip is mainly an expensive proof of willingness to sell.
