Standard Chartered Plans Institutional Crypto Custody in Singapore

Standard Chartered’s Singapore unit plans to custody selected cryptoassets, stablecoins, and tokenized real-world assets for institutional clients and accredited-investor corporations.

The service remains subject to applicable regulatory requirements. The bank’s 8 October announcement does not provide a launch date, supported-asset list, fee schedule, or named first customer.

Standard Chartered intends to connect custody with its financing and securities-services business. That design could let a client hold, finance, service, and eventually tokenize assets through one banking relationship rather than separating digital-asset custody from traditional prime and securities operations.

Singapore would extend the bank’s existing digital-asset custody footprint across the United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg, and Hong Kong. The bank is also working to bring parts of Zodia Custody, which it launched with Northern Trust, more directly into its corporate banking business.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

The strategic value lies in integrating custody with financing and asset servicing, not simply adding another wallet. The plan becomes operationally significant when Standard Chartered identifies the regulatory pathway, supported assets, safeguarding structure, and first live balances. Until then, this is a bank-approved expansion plan rather than a functioning Singapore custody product.
