Kalshi Investigates Three Pre-Announcement Bets on Trump’s Press Secretary Pick

Kalshi is investigating three wagers placed before news organizations reported that President Donald Trump would appoint Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary. The bets totaled approximately $173 and are expected to pay about $9,600.

The Block summarized the investigation after The Wall Street Journal analyzed public Kalshi data. A $19 wager was placed Thursday night. Two additional bets, worth roughly $74 and $80, arrived shortly before news reports Friday afternoon. Zacharia had traded near 1% probability.

A Kalshi spokesperson confirmed the internal probe to the Journal. Public trading records do not reveal customer identities, but Kalshi maintains identifying information for its users. No public evidence reviewed for this scan identifies the traders or establishes that they possessed nonpublic information.

The episode follows an August CFTC settlement with a former White House teleprompter operator who traded contracts tied to presidential speech content after seeing prepared remarks. Kalshi assisted that investigation. The platform says it has required employer disclosures in markets at elevated manipulation risk and made more than 20 law-enforcement referrals during the first quarter.

Small wager size does not remove the integrity issue. Contracts tied to appointments, speeches and government actions can be highly sensitive to information held by a narrow group of employees, contractors and advisers. Anonymous public order books make unusual timing visible without revealing whether a trader had legitimate research or prohibited access.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

This is an investigation, not a finding of misconduct. Its significance lies in repetition: political event markets keep creating situations where private government information can have immediate cash value. The credibility test is whether Kalshi can identify the traders, preserve records and refer evidence when warranted without treating every improbable winning bet as proof of insider activity.
