Bitcoin Open Interest Drops 12% as Leverage Leaves the Market

Battlefield Report

Bitcoin fell 1.9% over the past 24 hours, but the bigger shift occurred in the derivatives market.

Open interest declined 12%, while the Bitcoin Perpetual Market Pressure Index dropped to 46, falling below its 30-day average. Together, the data suggests traders are closing positions rather than opening new shorts.

Intelligence Findings

Open interest contracted during 21 of the past 24 hours, pointing to a broad reduction in leveraged exposure across perpetual futures.

At the same time, the Pressure Index broke below both the 50 threshold and its 30-day average near 58, showing that buying activity has weakened.

The combination of falling price and falling open interest typically reflects deleveraging, not aggressive bearish positioning. In contrast, rising open interest during a price decline would indicate fresh short positions entering the market.

Threat Assessment

The current structure is less bearish than a short-driven selloff, but demand has clearly weakened.

If the Pressure Index remains below 58 and open interest continues to contract, Bitcoin could face additional downside. A recovery above the 30-day average, accompanied by stabilizing open interest, would suggest buyers are returning.

Intelligence Assessment

The latest decline appears to be a leverage reset rather than a structural breakdown. Excess positioning is leaving the market, reducing liquidation risk, but conviction from buyers remains limited. The next signal to watch is whether leverage returns alongside improving buying pressure, or if futures participation continues to fade.
