Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Token Collapses 98% as Bot Claims and On-Chain Questions Follow Chaotic Launch

Hunter Biden’s newly launched LAPTOP memecoin has become a case study in the risks surrounding thin liquidity, automated trading and politically branded tokens, collapsing as much as 98% shortly after its September 9 debut on Base.

The token initially surged to extreme valuations within minutes of launch before reversing almost immediately. Decrypt reported that blockchain intelligence firm Arkham recorded LAPTOP at approximately $190.81 just two minutes after launch, even though the liquidity pool held only about $48,000. That imbalance allowed relatively small trades to produce enormous swings in the quoted token price.

The consequences for some early buyers were severe. CoinDesk, citing Nansen data, reported 46,675 buy transactions versus 16,038 sells during the first 24 hours, involving more than 20,000 unique buyers. One wallet examined by Nansen was down roughly $199,000, while another buyer who acquired about 28,400 LAPTOP without selling was sitting on an approximately $118,000 loss.

The LAPTOP team has rejected allegations that the collapse resulted from insiders dumping tokens. Instead, it blamed sniper bots and insufficient initial liquidity for creating the violent opening move. Sniper bots are automated programs capable of detecting newly launched tokens and submitting transactions almost immediately, potentially buying ahead of ordinary traders before liquidity and prices stabilize.

The project says there was no private presale or preferential allocation to outside investors or influencers and that its contract address, token distribution and security audit were disclosed before trading began. The founders’ 30% allocation is reportedly locked for six months and scheduled to vest over two years. The team also announced plans to deploy another 4 million LAPTOP tokens—0.4% of total supply—to incentivize liquidity on Aerodrome pools.

But the on-chain picture requires additional scrutiny. TheStreet reported that an address associated with the project received 100 million LAPTOP tokens, equal to 10% of total supply, before launch, and subsequently transferred or sold more than 42 million after trading opened. That report does not by itself establish wrongdoing or prove that Hunter Biden personally controlled or profited from the wallet, so wallet ownership and the purpose of those transactions remain important points requiring verification.

The launch also produced extraordinary differences between winners and losers based on seconds of execution. Arkham data cited by Decrypt showed one wallet acquiring 9,124 LAPTOP near launch and selling minutes later for approximately $1.18 million, while another trader reportedly spent around $200,000 near the peak and was left with less than $3,000 shortly afterward.

The controversy quickly spilled beyond crypto markets. Biden publicly defended the project and attributed the launch problems to bots and liquidity conditions. Eric Trump responded publicly with criticism of Biden. The political exchange added attention to the token, but it does not resolve the more important blockchain question: what actually caused the extreme price formation and subsequent collapse?

LAPTOP launched with a supply of one billion tokens. Thirty percent is allocated to founders, while another 20% was designated for airdrops that included wallets that had lost money holding the TRUMP memecoin. Coinbase’s Base team previously emphasized that Base is a permissionless blockchain and that LAPTOP’s deployment on the network did not constitute a Coinbase or Base endorsement of the project.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

The most important intelligence from the LAPTOP launch is not the political fight between Hunter Biden and Eric Trump.

It is the market structure.

A token briefly reached an enormous implied valuation while operating against extremely thin liquidity. That created conditions where automated traders could dramatically move price and where buyers entering seconds apart could experience radically different outcomes.

The team’s explanation that sniper bots contributed to the volatility is plausible and consistent with known token-launch behavior. But that explanation should not end the investigation.

Token Recon is watching the 100-million-token project-linked wallet, the reported movement of more than 42 million tokens, Aerodrome liquidity additions, founder-token locks, wallet concentration and whether independent blockchain analytics can establish exactly where the transferred tokens went.

Until those flows are fully mapped, claims of either a deliberate insider dump or a completely bot-driven collapse should be treated cautiously.

For Crypto Scouts, the larger lesson is straightforward:

Market capitalization does not equal liquidity.

A newly launched token can display a multibillion-dollar—or even temporarily much larger—valuation on screen while having only a tiny amount of actual capital available to absorb selling.

LAPTOP demonstrated how quickly that difference can turn a high-profile launch into a battlefield.
