Hut 8 Rallies as AI Infrastructure Strategy Outpaces Bitcoin Mining

Intelligence Brief

Hut 8 shares have climbed roughly 200% from their 2026 low after the company shifted its focus from Bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure.

The rally accelerated following a 15-year, $9.8 billion lease agreement tied to its Texas data center operations, helping lift the company’s contracted AI services backlog to approximately $27 billion.

Why It Matters

The market is rewarding predictable infrastructure revenue over traditional mining operations.

While Bitcoin miners remain exposed to network difficulty, energy costs, and BTC price swings, Hut 8 is repositioning itself around long-term data center contracts designed to generate recurring cash flow.

The company’s latest agreement is expected to add 704 megawatts of capacity and generate roughly $653 million in annual revenue.

Diverging Strategies

Hut 8 and American Bitcoin now represent two different approaches to digital asset infrastructure.

After spinning off its mining business in 2025, Hut 8 shifted toward AI-focused data centers while retaining a majority stake in American Bitcoin.

The results have diverged sharply.

Hut 8 has become one of the strongest-performing names in the sector, while American Bitcoin has fallen more than 76% this year as investors reassessed the economics of large-scale mining operations.

The contrast suggests markets currently place a higher premium on contracted infrastructure revenue than on direct exposure to Bitcoin mining.

Risk Assessment

Despite the strong share performance, questions remain.

Hut 8 still needs to convert its $27 billion contract backlog into operating revenue, and several analysts expect meaningful profitability from its AI business to take time.

The company also continues to face scrutiny over data center power consumption, although management disputes claims that its operations are responsible for rising electricity costs.

Intelligence Assessment

Hut 8’s rally reflects a broader shift in investor priorities.

Capital is moving toward businesses with long-term infrastructure contracts and recurring revenue, while companies dependent on mining economics continue to struggle.

The next phase will depend on execution. Winning contracts has strengthened the investment case, but sustained performance will require Hut 8 to deliver the capacity, revenue, and margins those agreements promise.
