Kalshi Defends Crypto Volume After $539 Million Trading Anomaly Draws Scrutiny

Kalshi is defending its crypto derivatives market after an outside analyst identified $539 million in 24-hour Ether perpetual volume against only $3.1 million in open interest.

The ratio placed reported turnover at approximately 174 times the value of outstanding positions. Repetitive trades sized near $5,500 reportedly produced as much as 58% of the contract’s volume across four days, according to CoinDesk’s report on the allegations and Kalshi’s response.

The analyst argued that Kalshi’s filed fee schedule could give certain self-clearing members a net-zero trading cost when maker rebates offset taker fees. Low or zero transaction costs can make wash trading less expensive, although the trade pattern alone does not establish who executed the transactions or their intent.

Kalshi’s crypto product lead rejected the allegation. He said one dataset used in the criticism measured prediction-market share rather than perpetual-futures volume and explained that some headline volume reflects maximum contract payouts instead of the cash customers spent.

Kalshi also emphasized that it operates as a CFTC-regulated designated contract market and must publish its incentive programs. The company says fair-access rules prevent it from limiting self-clearing membership to hand-selected firms that satisfy its commercial preferences.

No regulator has publicly determined that the transactions were wash trades. The repeated sizing, extreme turnover-to-open-interest ratio and fee incentives nevertheless warrant independent review.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

Transparent filings are valuable, but transparency does not answer the market-integrity question by itself.

The decisive evidence will be account-level trading data showing whether the repeated transactions involved independent counterparties, genuine risk transfer and economically distinct beneficial owners.

Watch any CFTC response, revised volume reporting, changes to maker rebates and whether open interest grows in proportion to reported turnover.
