MARA Holdings transferred approximately 996 BTC, valued near $81.1 million at the time, to an address attributed to Galaxy Digital.
The transaction was flagged by Lookonchain and reviewed by CoinDesk. A transfer to Galaxy can support execution, custody, collateral or financing. It does not prove that the Bitcoin was sold.
The move occurs inside a documented treasury contraction. MARA’s holdings fell from 53,822 BTC in February to 35,577 BTC in August. In March, the miner sold 15,133 BTC for roughly $1.1 billion, primarily to repurchase convertible debt.
MARA is also allocating capital to artificial-intelligence and high-performance-computing infrastructure. That strategic shift gives the transfer a plausible balance-sheet context, but no company statement reviewed for this scan assigns a purpose to the 996 BTC movement.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
The wallet attribution and transaction size clear the Whale Activity threshold. Intent does not. Galaxy-linked downstream transfers, a MARA filing or a treasury update would distinguish a sale from custody or financing. Until then, the verified fact is an institutional transfer within a shrinking Bitcoin treasury.
