More Than 100 Economists Escalate Israel’s Crypto Sanctions Dispute

More than 100 economists, including former Bank of Israel officials, former central-bank governor Jacob Frenkel and several Nobel laureates, signed a letter on Sunday opposing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s suggestion that cryptocurrency could help Israel operate around possible sanctions. The letter is a substantive escalation from the central bank’s initial rebuke covered in the preceding Morning scan. Its signatories warned of higher unemployment, reduced foreign investment and damage to Israel’s standing in global markets. Their argument is that a payments workaround would not repair the trade, capital and banking relationships that broad sanctions would impair.

Netanyahu had told Israel’s Channel 10 that the government was preparing for a scenario involving sanctions on banks and agreed when asked whether cryptocurrency was part of the plan. The Bank of Israel responded that crypto cannot provide a viable route around sanctions and urged policymakers to preserve economic ties with major partners.

The dispute now sits directly inside Tuesday’s election. Opposition figures attacked the proposal, while polling cited by Reuters pointed to a possible parliamentary stalemate. No operational architecture, participating institution, legal authority or deployable system has been disclosed.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

The new letter turns a theoretical crypto claim into a broader warning about national economic policy. The absence of an implementation plan remains decisive. Crypto can move value, but it cannot by itself preserve correspondent banking, foreign investment, imports or market access. Any future assessment should require an official policy document, named agencies and a defined legal mechanism rather than campaign language.
