Router Protocol plans to cease operations by September 30, 2026, ending more than four years of work on bridges, cross-chain messaging and intent-based transaction infrastructure.
The project also plans to burn 303,333,198 ROUTE held in its treasury, according to its shutdown notice and The Defiant’s onchain review.
Router attributed the closure to consolidation around fewer blockchains, the commoditization of simple bridge routes and protocol fees that could no longer cover operating infrastructure. Attempts involving licensing, commercialization and acquisition discussions did not produce a sustainable outcome.
Usage had already collapsed. DefiLlama reported only about $9,880 in TVL at the review cutoff and no bridge volume during the previous 30 completed days, compared with approximately $515.9 million of lifetime tracked volume.
The project’s explicit withdrawal guidance concerns tokens held on centralized exchanges. Users are instructed to follow each exchange’s delisting schedule and remove assets before the venue’s applicable deadline.
Router did not provide a separate withdrawal deadline for assets in bridge contracts or liquidity-provider positions. Users should verify their positions through official interfaces and should not assume September 30 is the only relevant deadline.
Router says selected technology will be released as open-source software. It has not provided full execution details for the planned treasury burn or linked specific source wallets in the shutdown notice.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
Router Protocol’s closure is a market-structure warning for cross-chain infrastructure.
Technical capability does not guarantee sustainable economics when activity consolidates around a smaller group of chains, bridges and liquidity providers.
Token Recon is watching the treasury burn, exchange deadlines, any remaining user balances and whether the promised open-source components remain usable after the operating team closes.
