A wallet attributed by Arkham to Bitcoin seized in the Bitfinex hacking case transferred approximately 12,267 BTC on 8 October. The position was worth about $1.01 billion at the time of movement.
Nearly all of the Bitcoin went to new, unlabeled addresses rather than a known exchange destination, according to CoinDesk’s review of the Arkham data. Decrypt independently reported the same source attribution and transaction size.
The transfer is separate from the government-linked movements reviewed in the previous Morning scan. Those earlier transactions included Bitcoin routed toward Coinbase Prime. The new $1 billion movement is materially larger, and the reviewed destination labels do not identify an exchange.
The chain establishes that the coins moved. It does not establish a sale, auction, restitution payment, or custody decision. The March 2025 White House order directs forfeited Bitcoin deposited into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve not to be sold, but the legal classification and operational purpose of this specific transfer were not disclosed.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
The size and established source attribution clear the Whale Activity threshold. The unlabeled destinations prevent a defensible conclusion about intent. A government notice, court filing, auction record, or movement into an identified execution venue would materially change the assessment. Until then, this is a verified custody movement, not confirmed liquidation.
