Zcash developers are targeting November 5 for Network Upgrade 7, which would reduce block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and accelerate confirmation of shielded payments.
The timetable follows a coinholder vote in which approximately 2.4 million ZEC participated, representing 66% of eligible voting supply, according to CoinDesk.
NU7 would preserve Zcash’s existing issuance and halving schedule by reducing the reward paid per block while tripling the interval between halving events. Producing three times as many blocks cannot be allowed to triple overall issuance.
The upgrade would also temporarily remove approximately 60% of transaction-fee revenue from circulation. Those funds are scheduled to begin returning as supplemental mining rewards in February 2031.
Developers intend the reserve to help replace part of the declining block subsidy. The structure may strengthen long-term miner incentives, but temporarily withholding transaction fees also changes near-term mining economics.
The final activation decision is scheduled for October 20. The November target remains contingent on implementation, testing and agreement among network participants.
TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT
NU7 combines faster private payments with a long-term attempt to address declining miner revenue.
The 25-second target is technically straightforward to describe but operationally significant. Exchanges, wallets and miners must adjust confirmation policies, timing assumptions and reward calculations.
Watch the October 20 decision, final client software, exchange support, orphaned-block rates and whether the fee reserve meaningfully improves security after 2031.
