Nscale Loses Microsoft at a UK AI Site as Grid Delays Expose the Mining-to-Compute Bottleneck

Microsoft has withdrawn from an agreement to anchor Nscale’s planned AI data center in Loughton, England, after the expected power connection slipped into the 2030s, Reuters reported on October 19.

Nscale emerged from the bitcoin-mining infrastructure sector and has become one of the most closely watched examples of energy and data-center capacity being redirected toward artificial-intelligence workloads. The Loughton site was expected to host about 23,000 Nvidia chips for Microsoft Azure, according to CoinDesk’s account.

Both companies said their broader relationship continues. Nscale is exploring alternative power arrangements and other UK sites, but the withdrawal removes an anchor customer from this particular project before capacity was delivered.

The wider conversion narrative has a large gap between contracted capacity and billable service. CoinShares data cited by CoinDesk counted more than 4 gigawatts of AI capacity under contract among tracked miners, while only about 550 megawatts was producing customer revenue. Contract backlogs exceeded $100 billion, compared with just over $1 billion in annualized AI revenue.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

Mining companies can repurpose land, power relationships and data-center experience, but contracts do not become revenue until electricity, cooling, chips and financing arrive together. The Loughton loss is a concrete invalidation of the idea that announced AI capacity should be valued like operating compute. For crypto-linked infrastructure companies, energized megawatts and customer billing are stronger confirmation signals than contracted headline value.
