Bitcoin Core Rewrites Disclosure Policy for Bugs AI Can Find on Demand

Bitcoin Core has changed how it handles vulnerabilities that are easy to rediscover, explicitly including flaws that a developer can identify with a simple prompt to a large language model. The updated Bitcoin Core security advisory policy calls for faster releases and public disclosure when a bug no longer benefits from a long private embargo. bitcoincore.org

Under the revised process, maintainers can backport a fix to all maintained releases, publish a new version promptly and release the advisory alongside it. The approach differs from the longer disclosure windows used for vulnerabilities whose details are unlikely to be independently discovered.

The change does not announce an active Bitcoin exploit. It changes the response model for a class of software flaws whose scarcity has been weakened by automated code analysis. Decrypt’s report on the policy update identifies the merged change as work led by Bitcoin Core contributor Antoine Poinsot of Chaincode Labs.

AI tools do not need to invent a new attack technique to affect security operations. If they reduce the time required to locate a known class of flaw, the period between a private patch and public exploitation can shrink. A long embargo may then protect users less effectively than a rapid, coordinated update.

The burden shifts toward operators. Exchanges, miners, custodians and node administrators must monitor releases and deploy security updates quickly, because the new policy assumes some bugs may become broadly discoverable as soon as their general shape is understood.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

This is a governance response to AI-assisted vulnerability discovery, not evidence that Bitcoin Core has suffered an AI-driven breach. The lasting change is operational: patch velocity becomes part of Bitcoin’s defensive perimeter. The policy will prove effective only if maintained versions are released consistently and economically important operators shorten their deployment lag.
