Bank of Israel Rejects Netanyahu’s Crypto Sanctions Workaround

The Bank of Israel has publicly rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s suggestion that cryptocurrency could help Israel bypass international financial sanctions. The central bank said crypto cannot provide a viable route around sanctions and warned that Israel must preserve its relationships with major trading partners and the global banking system. ft.com

This is a material update to the earlier report on Netanyahu’s televised remarks. His proposal raised a theoretical possibility. The central bank’s response brings the country’s monetary authority into the dispute and identifies the practical constraint: international trade still depends on correspondent banks, regulated settlement channels and counterparties that enforce sanctions and compliance rules.

The Financial Times reported that Netanyahu made the proposal in a Channel 10 interview on Friday. Opposition leaders also criticized the idea. The Times of Israel and Globes carried the central bank’s rebuttal.

Existing Bank of Israel guidance provides useful context. A central bank banking supervision document warns that attempts to circumvent foreign sanctions expose Israeli banks to legal, compliance, anti-money-laundering and reputational risks. The document is broader than the latest political exchange, but it shows that the institutional position predates this weekend’s dispute.

Decentralized networks can transfer assets without a domestic bank, but they cannot guarantee access to fiat settlement, insured custody, correspondent relationships or compliant trading partners. The Bank of Israel’s intervention sharply narrows the proposal’s operational credibility. A real policy shift would require legislation, regulatory instructions or a state-backed settlement framework, none of which has been announced.
