ETHEREUM CANCELS HOODI GLAMSTERDAM TEST AFTER GAS-RULE RISK SURFACES

Ethereum developers have postponed the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi test network after security researchers identified interactions between proposed gas-accounting rules and existing smart-contract failure handling. The activation had been scheduled for October 26 at 17:42:48 UTC. No replacement date has been announced.

ChainSecurity’s analysis focused on EIP-8037 and EIP-8038. Under the proposed rules, gas refunded when storage changes are rolled back can leave a calling contract with a different amount of gas than existing software expects. A contract that previously reverted entirely could have enough gas to record a failed operation or disable a later attempt.

The opposite failure is also possible. CoinDesk reported ChainSecurity’s calculation that creating a new storage slot could require 110,020 gas when a separate allowance is exhausted, compared with 22,100 under current rules. Contracts using fixed gas assumptions could fail during operations that are valid today.

The finding concerns proposed network behavior, not an exploit on Ethereum mainnet. Developers canceled a testnet rehearsal before deployment, which is the function of staged testing. Glamsterdam completed its Sepolia activation on October 6, but the Hoodi test and planned increase to a 200 million gas limit are now postponed.

Ethereum has not set a confirmed mainnet activation date for Glamsterdam. The upgrade also includes changes to block-builder selection and capacity. Developers must decide whether to modify, separate or remove the affected proposals before rescheduling Hoodi.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

This is a prevented deployment risk, not a production breach. The security process worked because researchers found a compatibility problem before mainnet. The next confirmation point is a revised EIP design with reproduced tests against affected contract patterns, followed by a new Hoodi activation date. Any claim that Ethereum contracts are currently being exploited by Glamsterdam is false because the disputed rules are not live.
