Preferred Shares Bought 135,979 Bitcoin, Now Their Dividends Compete With New Purchases

Bitcoin-focused perpetual preferred shares financed the acquisition of 135,979 BTC through 5 October, according to Fidelity Digital Assets research. The structure has opened a fixed-income channel for corporate bitcoin accumulation, but its recurring dividends and par-value management now compete with additional purchases for the same pool of cash. fidelitydigitalassets.com

Fidelity estimated that the products had grown to about $12 billion in market value and funded more than half a percent of bitcoin’s total supply in a little over a year. Strategy pioneered the structure in July 2025, then added multiple preferred classes with different dividend and conversion features. Strive later adopted a related model.

The mechanism works most cleanly when preferred shares trade near or above par. Issuers can sell new shares, meet the promised yield and direct net proceeds toward bitcoin. When a preferred falls materially below par, repurchasing it can become a more attractive use of capital than buying additional BTC.

CoinDesk reported that Strategy’s latest weekly activity illustrates the tradeoff. The company spent about $193 million repurchasing STRC while buying 267 BTC. STRC, the variable-rate preferred, pays a dividend near 12 percent, creating a continuing dollar obligation regardless of bitcoin’s short-term performance. coindesk.com

Spot exchange-traded products remain the larger transparent demand channel. Fidelity calculated that spot bitcoin ETPs accumulated 888,185 BTC in their first year, far above the preferred-share total. The newer securities nevertheless extend bitcoin-linked financing into an investor base seeking income rather than direct token exposure.

TOKEN RECON ASSESSMENT

Preferred financing converts future corporate cash flows into current bitcoin demand, but it also creates a dollar-denominated claim that must be serviced. That makes the buying engine reflexive: strong preferred pricing can fund more BTC, while weak pricing can divert capital into repurchases and dividends. The next useful signal is not another headline issuance figure, but whether net proceeds after servicing and buybacks continue to produce meaningful bitcoin accumulation.
